Peacefully at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Chatham, on Sunday November 13, 2011, Jacob “Jake” Vellinga, age 81, of Chatham, beloved husband of the late Barbara (Martin) Vellinga(1998). Born in Chatham in 1930, son of the late Jean Koning and John Vellinga.
Jake is retired from International Harvester after 35 years of service. He was past president of Chatham and District Labour Council. He spent many years as instructor in Canada and the United States for several different Union organizations, and was a member of the Moose Lodge and held several executive offices in local 127 U.A.W.
He is survived by 2 daughters; Judy Vellinga and partner Nora Campbell of Ancaster, Debbie Vellinga of London and by 2 sons; Larry Vellinga and his wife Sue of Chatham and Jamie Vellinga and his wife Karen also of Chatham. Cherished grandfather of Fawn, Emma, Sarah, Sierra and Jarred and great grandfather of Daine. Dear brother of Martha Bosveld of Waterdown, Henry and Marlene of Chicago, John and Marg of Muskoka, Herman and Fran of Chatham and Bob and Willy also of Chatham. Predeceased by a son Tim (1975), a sister Betty (1952), 3 brothers; Harry, Paul and Raymond and by an infant brother Harry (1931).
Friends and relatives may visit at the Funeral Home, 156 William St. S. Chatham (519-352-5120) on Tuesday November 15, 2011 from 2- 4 pm and 7-9 pm, where Parish Prayers will be offered at 3 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday November 16, 2011 at 11 am in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.
