Obituary of Vera Studnicka

Please share a memory of Vera to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Peacefully at Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Chatham on March 4, 2026, Vera Studnicka passed away at the age of 96. Born on September 12, 1929 in Radějov Morova Czechoslovakia, she was the only child of the late Katherine “Katie” (Mojzis) and Frank Svinka. Loving mother of David Studnicka (Beth) and Gail Studnicka (Jimmy). Beloved grandmother to Matthew (Mindy), Nicholas (Veronica), and Katie (Dave). Cherished greatgrandmother to Allie, Joey, Jeffrey, Reid, Drew, and Madison, and adored greatgreatgrandmother to Olivia. Dear sister-in-law to Jerry and Anne Studnicka, Francis Gazarek (the late Jerry), and the late Helen Kuna. Loving Aunt to Mike Studnicka (Sandy), Todd Studnicka (Jacqui) and many great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her loving Aunt Francis Vsetula, of whom was her namesake, and Mother and Father-in-law Anna and Joseph Studnicka Sr. Vera will also be missed by the members of the Harwood family.

Cherished lifelong friend to Alice Vanek, Shirley Piacek, the late Emily ‘Millie’ Spacil, the late Helen Buchta, and the ladies of The Old Czech Hall. Dearest friend to Margaret Suplat (the late George) and her puppy, Rosie who Vera loved so dearly. Vera also looked forward to her
monthly meetings with her ‘card friends’. Vera worked for many years in various roles but among her favourites was her role at Victoria Residence where she met Joanne Jackson (Lloyd Jackson) and Gerald McGuire. Through this friendship, Vera became a bonus grandmother, cook, friend, and listener to their children Sarah and Carter, who she cared for like her own.

A special thank you to Gord and Joanne Harvey and Penny McKittrick. Vera’s family wishes to send gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Ambreen Moazzam, Nurse Laura, and the staff at Thamesview Family Health Team, and to the caring staff of the 4 th floor Medicine Unit at
Chatham-Kent Health Alliance. Heartfelt thanks is also extended to Doris Summerfield of Blessed Sacrament Parish. Vera’s life was a story of strength, rich tradition, deep faith, and enduring love. She came to Canada as an infant, carried in the arms of her mother, when her father secured employment and began a hopeful new chapter for their family. Raised on a farm in Eberts, Vera learned the value of hard work early in life, working side by side with her parents in the fields — experiences that shaped the resilience, humility, and generosity that defined her character. A woman of faith, Vera drew comfort and guidance from her spiritual life throughout the years.

In her younger days, she attended St. Michael’s Parish in Dresden, and later in life was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Chatham. Vera was deeply proud of her Czech heritage and carried it with her throughout her life. She lovingly prepared traditional Czech meals and baked treasured family recipes right up until her passing, preserving her culture through food, tradition, and togetherness. She was one of many
founding members of the CanadianCzechoslovakian Friendship Club in Dresden, where she greatly enjoyed participating in traditional Czech dinners and the fellowship of shared heritage and community. Her home was always filled with warmth, from the many beloved pets she cared for over the
years to the comforting aromas of her kitchen. Vera was a talented baker, sewer, and knitter, creating cherished sweaters, afghans, and handmade gifts that will continue to warm both hearts and homes for generations.

Above all else, Vera’s greatest joy was her family. She loved her children and grandchildren dearly and was immensely proud to be a great and greatgreatgrandmother. Her legacy lives on in the traditions she preserved, the faith she lived, and the love she so freely gave to all who were blessed to know her.
