I am so deeply saddened to hear of Sister Mary Frances’ passing. It was such a gift to know her and to be in her classes at Brescia. She was such a strong, caring person who helped me through some very difficult times and helped me to never lose sight on becoming a French Teacher. She helped me to believe in myself and I consider her one of the greatest influences in my life. It was an honour to introduce her to my husband and daughter and I will always keep her in my heart. - Karen Kilbourne née Clifford

Sister Mary Frances and I met in 1987. She was an accomplished scholar, an amazing teacher, a true mentor to her students and colleagues, and simply a dear, dear friend to me. She witnessed our children growing up, enjoying Halloween outings when they were little, and becoming a confidante to them when they were teenagers. Once we moved to St. Catharines, she loved visiting the Niagara Region.
One of the last graduate students of Dr. Bush at Western University, she completed her doctoral thesis on « George Bernanos’ Debt to Thérèse of Lisieux », which found great acclaim in France, and was published by Mellen Press in 1996.
As Chair of her Department at Brescia University College, Sister Mary Frances worked tirelessly to present her students with exceptional learning opportunities. Among other initiatives, she created links with local schools in London, Ontario, so that students could experience volunteer teaching in French first-hand. She was beloved by her students, receiving invitations to many weddings and special occasions. She continued attending conferences until the end of her career to remain up-to-date on the latest teaching trends as well as academic advances in her field.
She always had a kind word and an open ear for everyone; her Irish ancestry translated into a fine sense of humour, and she was greatly interested in her German heritage.
Sister Mary Frances will be deeply missed by many. Our family and friends mourn her passing, and we wish to present our deep-felt condolences to her family and the Ursuline Sisters.
With profound sympathy, Astrid Heyer

Dear Sister Mary Frances’ Family, Friends, and Ursuline Family,
Sister Mary Frances had a heart of gold and a caring concern for all, and this was as clear as the stars that shine above us.
Her genuine interest in her students at Brescia College was very apparent, and during her retirement, she often mentioned how much she missed the opportunity to help and to teach them… and also to see them grow and flourish.
All who met and knew Sister Mary Frances will miss her good nature, her positivity, and her wide smile.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Elma and Richard Kimpel

Sr. Mary Frances was such a sweet soul, approachable and smart. I came to know her through the French department at Western, and although I never was a direct colleague of hers, I regularly came across her when I lived in the Brescia neighbourhood. She always had a kind word and was always positive. My deepest sympathy to the Ursuline community, her friends and family.
