I have some corrections to the schools Dad attended. According to Janice, a first cousin of Dad, he first attended SSS 9 (also known as St. Philippe School). This brick school was located on Lot 7 of the 9th Concession (St. Philippe Line), just past the cemetery (and the original St. Philippe Church), was built in 1912. Originally, the half-acre site was purchased from Francois Luc Emery.
St. Philippe School was the only separate school within the Grande Pointe area. It was a Catholic bilingual school with French as the main language of communication and instruction.
Dad went to this school for only a short time. One of his favourite teachers there was Mlle. Seguin.
Dad's father, Herve, and his brothers also attended the same school as Dad. This school replaced the frame schoolhouse which was built in 1873. Remi Emery, Dad's grandfather, his siblings and Eveline Griffore, Remi's future wife, attended this St. Philippe's School. This frame school replaced the first schoolhouse in Grande Pointe, which was a log cabin built in 1860.
Next, Dad attended SS.4 Dover at the corner of the 7th Concession (Heron Line) and the Winter Line after his family moved to the 7th Concession. This was a 2 room Public School, with only 20 minutes of French taught per day. Dad's mother, Zoe Delanghe, and her sister Edna, also attended the school in the 1920s. Dad had fond memories of Miss Blanche St. Pierre, a very artistic teacher, at S.S. 4, who kindly took movies of my parents' wedding and the baptism celebrations of my three siblings and me.
Later, he attended Ecole Secondaire de Pain Court for his high school education.

Dad was a very kind man who loved his family. I remember Dad took us to Detroit to watch a Tigers ballgame one evening in the summer. After the game, we went to the parking lot. Our car wouldn't start! It was dark and scary! Along came a good Samaritan who got our car started. What a relief! Dad thanked him and gave him some money for his kindness to us.
Dad helped his parents on their farm before his Dad died. Furthermore, he helped me on my farm along with Jerry, our friend and neighbour. I am very grateful to them.
While Dad lived on the farm, he first attended SS10, a French Catholic School on the 10th concession near Grande Pointe for a short time. Then he went to PS7, an English Public School on the 7th concession near his second home on the 7th. After he and his mother moved to Chatham, he attended Ecole Secondaire de Pain Court, ESPC, a French Catholic High School. There were only about 10 students in his class. He always regretted that he wasn't able to attend French schools throughout all his school years. He loved the French language!

The Delanghe and Emery families established their roots in Grande Pointe, a rural community in Chatham-Kent County. I have included some beautiful pictures from the early days with family - parents Zoe and Herve Emery, Uncle Ted and Aunt Mary Emery as well as the beautiful St. Philippe Church. In addition, there is a picture of one of Omer’s teachers, Mademoiselle Seguin, who was a kindhearted and influential teacher of Omer’s. She is pictured on cross country skis. At school, memorable pictures were taken in celebration of Omer and his classmates’ First Communion as well as Confirmation. A young Omer with his cousin and dear friend, Oscar Leclair, are also pictured together.

60th Wedding Anniversary - August 4th, 2022
Thank you, Mom and Dad, for providing us with a foundation of love in our home in which we grew up. We thank you for teaching us about God’s love for us and showing us, through example, a life filled with faith. As a result, we had the opportunity to grow in our faith as well. Thank you for the early years of teaching us to read, ensuring that we did our homework daily, and teaching us the value of hard work and goal setting. You taught us the importance of education. In our adult lives, we have deepened our appreciation for everything that you have taught us as well as the many sacrifices that you both made for all of us. You modeled good parenting to each of us. The four of us feel privileged to have you as our parents. We thank you for your deep love for us. As a couple, you have exemplified great friendship, and a true love for each other that has only grown over 60 years. We love you and know that your love has no end. God bless.

Grandpa
Omer and Marianne were blessed with 4 children, John, Diane, Lisa and Mark, as well as two son-in-laws, Philip Mathia and Americo Todino. His family continued to expand with 10 grandchildren: Jacqueline ( Jeffrey Hull ), Danielle and Brayden Mathia, Gabriela, Michael, Olivia and Zachary Todino, and Matthew, Jacob and Joshua Emery. Before Omer passed away, he learned of the safe arrival of his first great grandchild, Charlotte Danielle Hull.
Omer felt uncomfortable at times smiling while having his picture taken. He said that he didn’t want to ruin the photo. Some of these candid shots show my Dad enjoying the moment with his grandchildren, with a great big smile on his face. These pictures only bring me smiles and a few tears when I think of how caring and involved he was in their lives.

Celebrating a Special Mother
When Omer was 14 years old, his father, Herve, sadly passed away. Omer’s mother, Zoe, bravely made some important decisions. The family farm was sold and they moved to Chatham. Zoe went to secretarial school and then became employed at the St. Joseph’s rectory as the parish secretary. Although they grieved for the loss of a loving father and husband, they loved and supported each other through these tough times.
This love and support continued throughout the years. Zoe helped Omer and Marianne by babysitting her grandchildren, John, Diane, Lisa and Mark, when needed. She never came to visit empty handed and brought the most delicious home baked pies and cakes. ( We really loved her chocolate birthday cakes!) Omer, on the other hand, called Zoe daily, cut and tended to her lawn weekly, and repaired and maintained her home. It was special to witness the love my Dad had for his Mother through his actions.
In December, 2013, we celebrated Zoe Emery’s 100th birthday. It was such a special occasion to celebrate such a remarkable woman!

Make New Friends (by Joseph Parry)
Make new friends, but keep the old.
One is silver, the other is gold.
A circle is round, it has no end.
That's how long, I will be your friend.
A fire burns bright, it warms the heart.
We've been friends, from the very start.
You have one hand, I have the other.
Put them together, We have each other.
Silver is precious, Gold is too.
I am precious, and so are you.
You help me, and I'll help you
and together we will see it through.
The sky is blue, The Earth is green
I can help to keep it clean
Across the land, Across the sea
Friends forever, We will always be.

The Family Tree
While growing up, our family enjoyed visiting with Dad’s relatives from both the Delanghe and Emery sides of the family. We would often have Sunday dinners at Grandma Zoe’s home on Robertson Avenue, and share in conversations and laughter together, whether it was in English, French with the Emery side or Flemish with the Delanghe side.
Beyond his parents, Dad was blessed to have wonderful aunts, uncles, and cousins in his life. In addition, Dad was well loved by his mother and father-in-laws, Olive and Maurice Waddick, as well as the Waddick family.
I have included some of the many family members Omer was fortunate to know and love.

The Early Years
Dad became the person that I knew and loved through his life experiences as well as due to the love, care, and support given to him from his parents and grandparents. Dad was fortunate to grow up on a farm outside of Grand Pointe. He learned about the family business of farming and developed a strong work ethic, especially working in the tobacco fields.
Enjoy viewing pictures of Dad’s parents, grandparents as well as pictures from the farm. Also included are pictures of Omer, his father, Herve Emery, his mother, Zoe Emery, as well as good old Buster on the tractor with Omer!

Navistar International, Chatham
In 1948, a 300,000 square foot truck assembly plant was built on Richmond Street West in Chatham. This factory, called International Harvester, expanded several times to a total of 790,000 square feet on 80 acres of land and employed over 2400 people. The plant became the largest and most complete exclusive medium and heavy-duty truck manufacturing plant in Canada. In 1986, the name was changed to Navistar. Unfortunately, in 2010, Navistar announced plans to close.
My father, Omer Emery, began working in the office at Navistar in 1965 as a Cost Accountant. His years of dedication and hard work were celebrated when he retired at Navistar in 1994. One of the photos included, shows my Dad with his boss, Cor Kool, presenting him with a retirement gift.

Grandpa, you will forever hold a special place in my heart. You were always so gentle, so kind, and so loving. I’ll always remember when you took Michael and I to your cousin’s farm to pet the alpacas and see all the animals. I’ll always remember your love of dogs and how much my sweet Leo adored you. I’ll never forget how your scent always made me feel safe and protected. I will always remember how you never missed an opportunity to tell me you were proud of me. Making you proud filled me with an immense and irreplaceable sense of joy. For that reason, I promise to live my life in such a way as to make you forever proud, Grandpa.
Love, your anniversary baby,

Dad was a very kind man. I remember, a few years ago, he saw an elderly neighbour carrying heavy grocery bags from the bus stop. Right away, he volunteered to drive him to the grocery store every week when we shopped. We did this for several years.
Dad was very fond of animals and treated them kindly. I recall a poor dog, in the neighborhood, that was tied up from morning until late at night. The people were not mean to the dog; they were just too busy to care for him. Apparently, they rescued this dog because he was the runt of the litter. Omer offered to take Runt for a walk with our dog, Bart. Later on, he told the lady that he knew someone who would like to adopt him. Happy ending! Finally, we took him to the Humane Society which found him a caring older couple to adopt him.
Dad was very precise and hard working at home and at work where he figured the cost of every part of the truck to several decimal points in spite of his poor vision.
I am thankful to Dad for helping me manage my farm. He was not afraid of working hard or getting his hands dirty!
He was a very humble man who never boasted about himself or his accomplishments. He was happy to be with family and friends. He was a great inspiration to me.

I would like to share a heartwarming story about my Dad who has always been there for me, and has shown unwavering support and determination in my life. Despite facing the challenges of being legally blind, he has always gone above and beyond to be there for me. This particular story is a testament to his incredible spirit and love.
A few years ago, my Dad called me on the phone and asked me if I would be around on the weekend as they wanted to help me catch up with some chores around the house, in particular some painting which is not my favorite thing to do :). So, it was Dad, Mom and my brother John that would be visiting me that weekend.
What makes this story remarkable is that my Dad, despite his visual impairment, was not deterred in the slightest. I remember, he took out the painter's tape and meticulously placed it throughout my living room and bedroom, ensuring that the paint job would be nothing short of perfection. Collectively we got the living room all painted as well as a large amount of base boards for various rooms of the house. We accomplished so much that weekend!
After our hard work, we decided to treat ourselves to a well-deserved meal at State and Main – Diane, Phil and Brayden also joined us. It was a special time that sticks out in my memory, where we celebrated our hard work together.
In closing, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my Dad for always being there for me, for teaching me the value of hard work, determination, faith in God and love for family. I will cherish the memory of your unwavering support forever. Thank you, Dad, for being my inspiration.
Love,
Your son, Mark

Omer, mon pere. You will always be missed. I want to start by thanking you for welcoming me into your family, giving me Lisa’s hand in marriage and always making me feel at home.
I always remember seeing how much you loved animals, especially Bart. You always had a few scraps, to secretly feed him under the table, but we all knew:).
I also remember how your face lit up when your grandchildren were around. You enjoyed holding them, talking to them and telling us stories of how they reminded you of your 4 children when they were young.
I remember how you carefully phrased your questions and how you gave me sound advice. You never pressured me to take your advice but offered it as a father. Your wisdom will always be appreciated
I also remember you as a faith-filled role model for your family and extended family. Your love for Church and Jesus has been naturally passed on to your family.
When you made decisions, the Lord was always at the centre of how you made them.
I enjoyed our time together. I enjoyed speaking French with you and our little jokes. I also enjoyed how much we both love dessert!! We probably have to thank Grandma Zoe for that habit:).
I know that you are with her now your father, brother and Bart.
I will continue to pray for you and ask that you pray for me, Lisa and our family.
Always love in our heart for you.

Eulogy
Written and Shared by Diane Mathia, his daughter
Omer Emery
December 31st, 1934 – June 6th, 2023
Generous, kind, hard-working, persistent, wise, protective, thoughtful, welcoming, humble, invested, punctual, honest, precise, meticulous, organized, neat, inspiring, perseverant, family-oriented, faith filled, and loving. These are all words that his children, John, Lisa, Mark and I gathered together to describe our father, Omer Emery. When we reflect on his 88 years in this world, we have much to celebrate. We are blessed and thankful for a father possessing these beautiful qualities, and from whom we learned so much.
My Father, Omer Emery, was born in Chatham, Ontario, on a cold New Year’s Eve, in 1934. He was brought up on a farm in Dover Township by his loving parents, Zoe and Herve Emery. Life on the farm was perfect for a boy growing up. As a little boy, he loved spending time in the barn with the animals, especially the newly hatched chicks. He also spent many summer days with his cousins, Oscar, Art, Margaret and Henry as well as young Aunt Laura, riding their bikes to the corner store in Grande Pointe to buy a brick of chocolate ice cream for a quarter. He loved having dinner at Aunt Edna and Uncle Leo’s place and digging into a homemade pie or crunching into some delicious Lucchen for dessert. He enjoyed conversing in Flemish and French with his relatives. Also, he valued going to visit Grandpapa and chasing his dog Buster and teaching him tricks all in French. Donne-moi ta patte, l’autre patte. Excellent!
It wasn’t always fun and games when living on the farm. Dad learned responsibility at a young age on the family farm by hoeing weeds in the fields, suckering and hanging tobacco in the barn, and feeding and milking the cows. Dad aspired to be a farmer when he grew up. Unfortunately, at the age of 14 years old, Dad’s life took a new and sudden change in direction when his father passed away. They were completely devastated but knew they would need to take care of each other. Dad and Grandma Zoe felt the need to change their pathway in life by selling the family farm and moving to the city of Chatham. Grandma Zoe traded her work on their farm to new work in the city as a secretary at St. Joseph’s Church.
Instead of looking out the window and seeing endless fields in the country, Dad’s new view was of St. Joseph’s Hospital, across the street from his home on Robertson Avenue. Dad continued his education at Ecole Secondaire de Pain Court and upon graduation started looking for a job. He accepted an accounting position at the Department of Highways, which was one of the most monumental and best decisions of his life. With his new job, he made a new friend, Joe Graham. Joe and his wife, Jeanette, thought he would be just the perfect match for Jeanette’s good friend.
Long before the internet and dating websites, Mom and Dad took a chance on a blind date. Their mutual friends, Joe and Jeannette Graham, were the matchmakers behind their match made in Heaven. Joe worked with my dad at the Department of Highways, and Jeannette, taught with my Mom at St. Ambrose School. On one special evening, Joe and Jeannette invited them both on a double date to go dancing. Thankfully, they both agreed, and the rest is history. They married on August 4th, 1962.
Marianne and Omer were exemplary as a couple, as parents to their four children and spouses as well as grandparents to their ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. They both didn’t often situate themselves in the limelight of attention, instead celebrated special and everyday events with their family and friends and spread their love in the process.
While Dad was at the hospital this spring, I told him that he was my hero. He fought many battles without complaint but with so much grace and humility. As you may know, Dad developed glaucoma when he was in his 30s. He slowly lost so many privileges that we with sight may take for granted, such as being able to read, drive a car, or recognize a friend from afar. He also fought battles with colon and bladder cancers, heart arrythmias and heart valve deficiencies. He went through treatments and surgeries and put his trust in the Lord. His latest hurdle was living through the effects of a stroke. He fought the good fight to stay with us a little longer. Fortunately, he was able to hear that his granddaughter, Jacquie, safely delivered his first great-grandchild, named Charlotte Danielle in North Carolina, on June 1st, five days before Dad passed away. A video was played of Charlotte crying soon after her birth. This was music to his ears and put a smile on his face.
Last summer, we celebrated my Mom and Dad’s 60th Wedding Anniversary at Blessed Sacrament Church and had a beautiful dinner at Mama Maria’s Restaurant. My sister, Lisa, and brothers, Mark and John and I all felt compelled to thank them for the special years we have all shared together. I feel so grateful that my mom and Dad could hear these words of thanks. It is a beautiful blessing knowing that Dad heard what we had to say while he was alive.
Our parents showed us the importance of spending quality time together as a family. We have a lot of great memories of things we did together such as going to the drive-in theater, picking and taste-testing strawberries at the local farms, enjoying a Tigers game in Detroit, and splashing around at the Sunday family swims at the YMCA. We also enjoyed countless bedtime stories and quality time playing catch in the backyard. We are also thankful for all the lessons that we received in piano, swimming, soccer, and gymnastics.
Dad was a sensible and intelligent man. He always had our best interest at heart. When we were teenagers, he would sometimes knock on our door for a chat. He was not afraid to have a heart-to-heart discussion with us, especially in those more turbulent years when we thought we knew it all…and guess what, we didn’t. He was pretty wise and, now being a parent and grandparent myself, I know just how wise he was. He also helped me find my passion in life by pursuing a teaching career in mathematics. He helped each of us find our passions. He always took an interest in what we did and was very proud of our accomplishments.
We are also very proud of Dad and his accomplishments. Dad loved the outdoors and grew a vegetable garden on Burton Avenue containing asparagus, lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, carrots, onions, rhubarb, peppers, cucumbers and zucchini. He also had the most meticulous weedless, green lawn in the neighbourhood. At work, he was one of the most reliable and precise cost accountants in his department at Navistar International. Even with his failing eyesight, he kept persevering with the accommodations of lighting and magnifying devices provided at work. After 30 years at Navistar International, Dad retired in 1993 and adopted a beautiful black cocker spaniel, named Bart, from the Chatham Animal Shelter. In retirement, Dad was able to continue his roots of farming by helping my brother, John, with his farm. Dad taught us the value of hard work and perseverance and to share your strengths and gifts with others.
Mom and Dad provided us with a foundation of love in our home in which we grew up. They taught us about God’s love and showed us, through example, a life filled with faith. As a result, we had the opportunity to grow in our faith as well. Dad taught us the importance of education. In my adult life, I have deepened my appreciation for everything that he taught us as well as the many sacrifices that were made for all of us. Mom and Dad both modeled good parenting, true love, and friendship.
Dad will be missed by all of us. We will never forget the important life lessons that he taught us over the years and has exemplified in his life. We will continue these life lessons to the next generation. Rest in peace, Dad, with Eternal life in Heaven.

I had the pleasure of joining the Emery family in 1996 after marrying Diane Marie Emery. Although I only got to know Omer in his retired life, he was always very proud to share his family history and inspire all of us. He overcame every hurdle he faced in life with dogged determination and a need to protect his family around him at all costs. He grew up as an only child, never meeting his older brother Oscar. He lost his father when he was only 14 years old and quickly had to step into big shoes where he forged a life-long bond with his mother who he supported every step of the way until her passing at 102 years of age.
He helped support 4 children and motivated each of them to go above and beyond in their academic, extra-curricular, and family lives. After he retired, he supported his older son John in securing his career as a farmer. He also continued to support his kids and grand-children through good times and hard times. Omer would inherit glaucoma and deal with loss of one of his major senses. This did not diminish his love and appreciation for the gift of his life. He supported 4 children, teaching them the value of hard work and the art of living conservatively. An accountant to the end, Omer would never lose sight of the bottom line while making sure his family had enough resources to live.
Omer always prepared for the worst and celebrated the best. He would overcome glaucoma, colon cancer, bladder cancer, heart arrhythmia, heart valve surgery, and the loss of a grand-child. Omer faced these hurdles head on and overcame them with grace and dignity. There is nobody I know who has lived life in a more self-sacrificing manner than that of Omer Oscar Emery. May he rest in peace while celebrating that his family will carry on his legacy.
Love your son in law, Phil Mathia

It was very bittersweet preparing to welcome my daughter into the world, knowing that her great grandfather's time on earth was coming to an end. I am so grateful that my sweet Grandpa got to hear his first great grandchild cry before he passed. My mother told me that he had the biggest smile on his face when he heard it. I will never forget the strength and kindness that Grandpa always showed, and the love he had for all of his grandchildren. Whenever I saw him, he always made sure to remind me how smart I was and how proud he was of me. He gave me so much confidence and made me feel like I could accomplish anything I set my mind to. I will never forget all the moments I shared with him, including the walks with Bart to the park and spending time with him in Rondeau Park. He went through so much in his long life and will always be my inspiration. I only wish I could give him one last hug.
Grandpa, I will love you forever and never forget. I can't wait to tell Charlotte about her Great Grandpa and how amazing he was.
Love,
Jacqueline Hull

It was truly an honour to deliver the Eulogy for my father. Putting into words how much my father has meant to me was not easy as there was so much to say. The introduction of my eulogy described his numerous qualities which were also reasons why I truly admired him. I will include this portion of my eulogy:
Generous, kind, hard-working, persistent, wise, protective, thoughtful, welcoming, humble, invested, punctual, honest, precise, meticulous, organized, neat, inspiring, perseverant, family-oriented, faith filled, and loving. These are all words that his children, John, Lisa, Mark and I gathered together to describe our father, Omer Emery. When we reflect on his 88 years in this world, we have much to celebrate. We are blessed and thankful for a father possessing these beautiful qualities, and from whom we learned so much.
Dad, you will be missed, but you will always live in all of us.
With love,
Diane Mathia

I have many wonderful memories of my Dad. He always put family first and was always present in our lives. He showed us how to live through his example. He called his mom daily and always was there to help her with her lawn and anything else she needed. He took us to swimming lessons, piano lessons, and many other extracurricular activities. He prayed with us and took us to Sunday Mass. He always provided for us, and always made sure we had a good pair of shoes. Education was important to my dad, and he always encouraged us to do our best. He saved and sacrificed for us so that we could all have a great education. I deeply appreciate all Dad did for his family. I will never forget the way my dad made me feel. I always felt protected, loved, valued and supported. I loved watching him with his grandchildren. His eyes would shine with pride. He always took the time to get to know his grandchildren and he was so proud of all of them. Dad lived a good life of love, family, faith and his legacy will continue to live on in his beautiful family. Rest in Peace, Dad. I know you will continue to watch over our family.
Love,
Lisa

Grandpa was always such a kind man. He was always thinking about others and their situation. He was always such a selfless person. Every time I saw grandpa, he always knew what was happening in my life. He always kept tabs on everyone, and cared so much about his family, friends, community members, and strangers. Grandpa did so much for us grandchildren. And how could I forget the yearly Easter Egg hunts. Grandpa, you are role model for all of us. Missing you each and every day. ~ Brayden

Dear Diane and family, I am sorry for your loss - my thoughts and prayers are with you.
From working with Diane, and through the wonderful social opportunities I've had to get to know her better, I can certainly begin to imagine the wonderful family life that Omer and Marianne created for their children. As we are all, in some ways, mirrors of our mother's and father's essence, may the memories of your father be with you as you carry on his values, great patience and generosity, as well as your beautiful gift to appreciate and nurture the gifts in others.

Marianne. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of Omer's passing.. Although I never knew Omer and you really well, I have many memories, With Omer being Uncle Del and Aunt Florence's nephew, we would occasionally see him. I don't know how, but I, knew his mother Zoe well, and always enjoyed our by-chance meetings. And I cannot forget our years, Marianne , when we were in the same room all through high school. may you find comfort and peace in the good memories of a life well-lived, and the courage as you go forth in a new stage of life that many of us are also travelling.
Sincerely,
Shirley (Richardson) Clark
