My condolences to the Ripley Family. I met Mel at Branch 28 Legion and of course at his dry cleaning store. We chatted a few times at the old branch and I always walked away knowing the Legion was in good hands with members like him. Always firm and polite with his opinions. Mel was there contributing to the Legion's never-ending fundraising events and he participated with every Poppy Campaign. May he rest in peace.

Q: What will you miss most about Mel?
A: I will forever miss his loving kindness and support. He would always listen if I needed someone to talk to. He was the most caring and beautiful friend a person could ever want to have and I am so glad I had that opportunity to know him. He will be in my heart for the rest of my life. Thank you Mel for being you. Miss you my dearest friend and always will. Be at peace.

So very sorry to hear of Uncle Mel’s passing!! I have a very fond memory of Uncle Mel coming home from the army (don't remember if it was just a furlough or not).. I was just a very little girl and have this image that we were in Grandma Ripley’s kitchen and he was in uniform. I remember him picking me up and giving me a little charm. It was a replica of the Eiffel Tower.

When I was quite young (4 or 5) and I went to visit Grandma Ripley with my mother, Uncle Mel would say, "Hi Skookum." and take me for rides on his bicycle. He had a big carrier on the front and I was able to sit in it while he rode around the block with me. That was over 65 years ago but the memory is as clear as day.

Growing up he was my favourite great uncle. I don’t think I ever called him Uncle Mel but rather Uncle boop. He would always tell me there was something on my shirt and as I would look down he would raise his hand with one finger out and boop me on the nose. Something to this day I have never forgotten. He will be missed and loved beyond belief.
