I had the total Joy of becoming friends with Mike in our teens as I was Russ’s girlfriend. We were a foursome. Later we both lived in London. Then in 1980 I moved to BC and lost touch. I did however met the love of his life Joanne on a couple occasions. Russ & I reconnected over coffee while I was back in Ontario 5/6 years ago and periodically talk on the phone. I asked about Mike often especially as we talked of our teen years. Today Russ & I talked and I asked about Mike only to be absolutely shocked/ devastated to hear he has passed. My heart is broken for Russ’s loss of his forever lifelong very close friend. I am also so very, very sad and broken hearted for this incredible shocking loss for Joanne and Joseph!
As All who knew Michael he was one Very Special person ❣️ who enriched our lives!! And now I join all of you in sharing our memories & loss of Michael.

It is rare to meet someone who initially feels like a comfortable, long-time friend. On meeting Mike, this was how I felt. I had no idea why then and I have no idea why now, as I write this tribute to someone for whom I have the greatest respect. There are some things for which there are no accurate words; however, I will attempt to illuminate Mike’s character.
Oddly, my mother, who could have been a local historian, had kept a picture of Mike from the Chatham Daily News when he was employed by Bell Canada. After she died, when sorting through her news clippings, I found the picture of a young Mike with his tripod set up capturing an image in downtown Chatham. I did not know him at the time the picture was taken; however, my mother may have felt that the photo would be meaningful in the future.
Mike had the uncanny ability to sense when someone in a group was too quiet and needed a little TLC. Added to this talent was his listening ear. True friends are those rare people who ask how you are and then wait for an answer. He was that rare person who asked a question and actually waited and listened to the answer rather than asking questions in order to talk himself. He did not often talk about himself unless someone specifically asked him a question.
Mike made carved wooden phone standers for each of our high school friends. Thanks to his gift I always know where my phone is. Prior to this gift, it was anybody’s guess where I had left it.
Mike gave me the highest compliment I have ever received. I will not share it here; it is too close to my heart.
I hate writing about Mike in the past tense. It does not seem right. To console myself, I try to concentrate on the fact that he no longer has any physical pain. He is free.
Love to Mike from Chatham….
Peace and love,
me

There are no words for a loss like this but there are cherished and beautiful memories.
We are in a public parking lot in Windsor, waiting for a bus to take us across the border to see a Tigers/Blue Jay game. Mike has brought his signature mango salsa and other treats. We are having a tail gate party. The weather is beautiful.Arnie disappears and reappears with a 6 pac of beer. We proceed to open the beer and the non-alcohol beer and are having a grand time, music blaring,
pure enjoyment. Suddenly Mike stops the music and starts to laugh and says you know that you are all breaking the law drinking in a public place. We pause, look around and make a decision..act like responsible 70 year old adults or act like underage drinking teenagers? We chose the latter and his laughter continued…,
We are sitting at Mike and Jo Ann’s dining room table sharing our story during the most difficult time of our life. Mike and Jo Ann are listening intently, quietly, focused on our words.not once interrupting. There were tears, many tears shared by the four of us that day. Every time after that when I saw Mike he would hug me tightly-push me away at arms length , look into my eyes and ask me how was I really?I was able to tell him my truth, honestly no pretending.he would pull me back into an even tighter hug.I will miss those hugs and moments.

On our wedding day I learned that our photographer had punctured his cornea picking apples. This photographer was Paul a great friend of Mike’s. Paul realized he could not do the shoot and passed the camera over to Mike. Our photos turned out fabulous and we will always cherish them. Amazing Christmas card’s also!

My condolences to the family. My dad was friends with Mike in the late 70s and I was only 9 or ten and with permission from my dad I was allowed to camp in the top bunk of his VW van when we went camping a few different times. Those memories have lasted a lifetime and am thankful all these years later for Mikes kindness.

So sorry to hear of our dear cousin's passing. Although I didn't see him often, he was always so kind and interesting to talk to. He loved to talk about his wife and son. He would often come to visit my parents, Olive and Maurice Waddick, and take pictures of them.
I extend my condolences to Jo Ann and the Bondy and Denomy families. I am sorry I cannot attend the funeral because I just tested positive for Covid.
May Mike rest in peace.

Oh Mike it is a long time since we were last together. We were bottling wine in my kitchen. That was one of the passions we shared together, making, bottling and drinking homemade wine. I remember as a boy visiting with you, Bob and Jude. Those were happy times. I remember your family visiting our farm and your dad taking time to "fine" tune our TV. Rest well Michael. Be at peace. I know you are with your brothers now, probable playing cards. Save me a chair at you table.
My sincere condolences to Mike's family. I will make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation on your behalf.

So Sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. We were close neighborhood friends growing up on our bikes & on the streets in and around Victoria Ave. We used to marvel at the sky and Mike, always the fun-loving idea guy, was part of many happy childhood days. As an early teen Mike introduced me to excellent music in particular Van Morrison, Frank Zappa. The world is surely a lesser place without him in it.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family.

Memories From Bella Coola
I first knew Mike mostly to see from my time at the Pines. He would serve as an altar boy at the Pines chapel.
In 1974, Tom & I moved from Chatham to Bella Coola. Tom left first with Jim Newkirk. He came back to Chatham to complete our move and then drove back to BC with Mike in a five-ton truck with all of our property. They had a memorable trip across Canada. Bella Coola had experienced a serious winter with masses of snow so the Hill was like driving in a tunnel. They lost their brakes and had a hair-raising trip down! I flew out with three children under four in May.
We rented an old two story wooden house and hosted more visitors there than the whole time we lived in Chatham. Lots of fresh salmon & homemade bread & jam. Mike’s 8-track music collection was the soundtrack of our first years in Bella Coola. (He continued to send us music that he copied for us for many years.)
Mike went on to work at Ocean Falls in the mill and kept our house full of visitors he told to look us up as they travelled from Ocean Falls through Bella Coola. It sometimes looked like a flop house with sleeping bags on our living room floor.
Mike had a truck with a box on part of the back that held a mattress and he and his dog enjoyed seeing other parts of the country. Tom & I and our three children used his truck to go back for a visit to Ontario while Mike watched our place.
Mike made friends wherever he went. He loved photography and documented our early years in the Valley. Over the years, Mike would find photos in his collection he thought we’d like and send us copies. He took us woodworking and sent us a couple of his woodworking projects. The beautiful cutting board is prized.
Every time we returned for a visit and flew into London to stay with my sister, Mike would pick us up. Once we even stayed with Mike & Jo Ann in the house they were making their own. On one occasion he treated us to his famous Eggs Benedict for breakfast.
It was a tradition we established to send back local smoked salmon and Mike would send back maple syrup & balsamic vinegar. (Just finishing the last of the maple syrup).
Tom & Mike kept in touch and we enjoyed our visits both in person & by phone. We kept each other up to date on each other’s family milestones and we enjoyed his bragging about Joe’s career, his marriage and his children. Mike & Jo Ann’s grandchildren are their pride & joy. Lots of photos shared!
We will miss Mike and his wonderful personality. He loved life, family and friends and we loved him back. REST PEACEFULLY, MIKE.

The times we spent in Bella coola B.C. and ocean falls and Prince George were filled with good times and lots of laughs. Great friend, fellow partier and just an all around fine man to travel with in our younger days.
