Obituary of Peter Doddy
Peacefully at Parkwood Veterans’ Care Centre in London on Friday, January 19, 2024, Peter John Doddy, age 100. Born in Chatham in 1923, son of the late Angela (Devolder) and Alex Doddy. Predeceased by his twin sisters Rose Grunwal and Eileen Ball, and his brother Joseph Doddy. Devoted husband of the late Elizabeth (Slaughter) Doddy (1992). Loving father of David Doddy, Deborah Doddy (Rob Elliott), Holly Rehman, Christine (Jim) Prosser, and Peter Doddy. Dearest grandfather of 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews.
As soon as he was able to enlist, Peter responded to the call to serve in World War II. He was assigned to the Calgary Highlanders Regiment, with whom he proudly served from 1942 to 1946 in Holland, Belgium, and France. Following the war, he returned to Chatham, where he worked for 40 years on the line gang at Chatham Hydro, rarely missing a day of work. During his long retirement, Peter attended morning mass daily, and looked forward to getting together with friends for coffee or breakfast afterwards at their usual haunts. Peter loved woodworking as well as the great outdoors, and above all, he enjoyed family time spent boating at Erieau and cottaging at Rondeau.
Special thanks to the remarkable team at Parkwood under Dr. Borrie, each of whom offered Peter extraordinary care, going above and beyond from the day of his arrival until his final moments.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home, 156 William Street South, Chatham (519-352-5120), with a private family mass to be held at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Anthony’s Cemetery. Donations to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund would be appreciated.
