Obituary of Doug Sparks

Please share a memory of Doug to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

At the Village on the Ridge Nursing Home, Ridgetown, on Tuesday October 8, 2024, Mark Douglas “Doug” Sparks, age 71, of Chatham. Beloved long term companion of Georgeina Blyde.  Friend and father figure to Connie Wilson. Born in Chatham in 1953, son of the late Rose (DeCooman) and Adam Douglas Sparks.  He is survived by his sisters:  Rosemary Brodie, Lynn Knill and Bonnie (Raf) Chow. Also sadly missed by his brother-in-law, Paul Pearson.

Predeceased by his sister, Nancy Pearson, and brother-in-laws Jack Brodie and Richard Knill. “Uncle Doug” will be dearly missed by two generations of nieces and nephews.

Doug loved to entertain those around him with his stories; he could really spin a tale! His stories will no doubt be shared and passed down by family and friends for many years to come. He had a quick wit, loved to tease others (in a good way), and could usually be found at family gatherings hanging out and laughing with his many nieces and nephews.

From a very young age, Doug loved anything with an engine: muscle cars, monster trucks, airplanes, motorcycles, speed boats, and pick-up trucks. He remembered fondly his days driving a transport truck and working with his Dad in construction. He was a loyal and dedicated Steelers football fan, as well as a Maple Leafs hockey fan.

Doug was recently baptized into the Catholic Church. He took this sacrament very seriously. One day in the hospital, he apologized to a couple of the nurses for being crabby toward them. When jokingly asked about the apology, Doug insisted he was “a lot nicer since all the Jesus stuff started”.

As per his wish, cremation has taken place and a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church on Tuesday October 15, 2024 at 11 am. The Hinnegan-Peseski Funeral Home, 156 William St. S. Chatham (519-352-5120) is in charge of arrangements. Interment of ashes will be in Maple Leaf Cemetery at a later date.

Donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated by the family.
